State and Society in Latin America

Introduction

A few decades back, if you had asked anyone the question, ‘Who discovered America? You would have gotten the obvious reply: the name Cristopher Columbus. However, if you ask the same question today, you will likely receive responses that even challenge the authenticity of the same question. Because these days, people are well aware that America and its native people have existed long before the birth of Columbus, and Europeans were generally ignorant of America's existence. Here, in this course titled ‘State and Society in Latin America’, we are going to discuss the various transformations that the people of the Americas underwent from the pre-Columbian era to this date.

State and Society in Latin America is a six-module MOOC offered by the Centre for Latin American Studies (CLAS), University of Kerala, that introduces learners to the historical, social, ethnic and political processes that have shaped contemporary Latin America. The course traces the region’s transformation from Abya Yala and Iberian colonial rule through the emergence of complex systems of ethnic stratification, mestizaje, popular mobilisation, struggles for political power and episodes of political violence.

Across six concise video modules, the course examines how colonialism, ethnicity, race, class, land, power and political conflict have interacted in the making of Latin American states and societies. It also highlights the diversity and contradictions of the region—often described as a “land of extremes”—while encouraging learners to understand Latin America not merely through its historical experiences but also through the political and social structures that continue to shape the region.

The course comprises six video modules with a total edited duration of 82 minutes and 94 seconds, providing a compact introduction to major themes in Latin American history, politics and society
